Random Team Generator
Split players into teams instantly. Use random selection for a fair draw, or skill ratings to make teams more evenly matched.
Enter your players
Add one name per line. Optional: add a skill rating from 1–5 after a comma, such as Alex, 4.
How our random team generator works
Paste your players into the box and choose how many teams you want. The tool randomly shuffles the list, then distributes people evenly so that team sizes differ by no more than one player. Generate again to get a new draw.
Can it make balanced teams?
Yes. Choose “Balance by skill rating” and write a rating after each name, separated by a comma, for example Alex, 4. Ratings range from 1 to 5. Players without a rating default to 3. The balancing option uses a simple greedy assignment to spread estimated skill across teams while keeping team sizes close. It is an approximation, not a guarantee of equal ability.
Where can I use it?
Use it to organise football and five-a-side matches, PE lessons, classroom groups, darts nights, online gaming sessions or workplace events. No account is needed, and you can copy or export your teams.
Do names get uploaded to a server?
No. This generator processes names in your browser. We do not send or save player lists on our own server.
Can I generate more than two teams?
Yes. You can make between 2 and 16 teams, as long as you provide at least one player per team.
Example: generate two five-a-side football teams
Enter ten player names, choose 2 teams and select Random teams. Click Generate teams to create two groups of five. Not happy with the draw? Click again for a fresh shuffle. You can share a link that opens these exact teams, copy the text, or download a CSV for later.
If you have eleven players, the generator makes teams of six and five rather than silently leaving somebody out. For a more competitive match, choose Balance by skill rating and enter ratings such as Alex, 4 or Jamie, 2. The numbers are estimates supplied by you; the balancing method cannot account for positions, fitness or goalkeeper ability.
Random draw or balanced team picker?
Random teams
Best for casual games, classrooms and any situation where everyone should have an equal chance of being placed together.
Skill-balanced teams
Best for repeat matches when you know roughly how strong each player is. The tool tries to spread those ratings across similarly sized groups.
What happens if the player count isn't even?
All entered players are assigned. For example, 13 players divided into three teams produces groups of 5, 4 and 4. Choose between 2 and 16 teams, with at least one player per team, and up to 200 players in total.
